Description

This set of figures comes as a pair of pairs: two models, each with two birds. They are delightfully cast and exhibit a wonderful patina which carefully highlights the intricate details of their modelling.

Each group shows two partridges on a naturalistic base, cast with plants, foliage and leaves. The birds are shown in a variety of poses, including foraging on the ground and preparing to take flight. These are dynamic poses which are expertly captured by their sculptor, Jules Moigniez (French, 1835-1894).

Moigniez was a respected modeller of animal figures, and displayed his bronze wares at the Paris Salon regularly across the mid- to late 19th Century. His models of birds, such as the present pair, were especially popular in the late 19th Century among the British market.
