Depicting a pair of desert scenes, with figures in the foreground, some mounted on camels, across a calm body of water in the centre and a desert horizon in the distance, these two works, a near symmetrical pair, are by the hand of English Orientalist watercolour artist Augustus Osborne Lamplough.
Lamplough began his career painting mainly Venetian interior scenes and landscapes, before working almost exclusively on watercolours set in North Africa around 1905 onwards. He mastered painting the sky within the hours of dawn and dusk, and used these rich red and orange tones to complement the warmth and dynamics of the desert, populating his works with a scattering of figures and a number of trees, in shades of gold and blue.
Elegant decorative works, and understated yet highly proficient in their execution, they make for a beautiful collector's pair.
