Pair of ormolu mounted Dresden porcelain pot pourri vases
By Dresden Porcelain Manufactory (German, active from 1865)
£22,000
These charming vases, featuring finely painted porcelain bodies, are adorned with pierced ormolu rims, a design that allows for the escape of the scene of pot pourri.
The pot pourri vases in this pair are crafted from Dresden porcelain mounted with ormolu, or gilt bronze. The white-ground porcelain body of each vase, which is bell-shaped in form, is adorned with cartouches containing outdoor genre scenes executed in a northern manner. The cartouches are surrounded by scattered sprays of polychrome flowers, a theme carried through into the domed covers, which also feature finely painted genre vignettes. Each vase features a pierced ormolu mount to the rim, to allow for the scent of pot pourri to escape. The sides of the vases are adorned with twin ormolu lions’ head handles, and each is supported above an ormolu base by a pierced ormolu socle. The covers of the vases are surmounted by figurative putto finials.
