This pair of columnar pedestals, wrought from ormolu (gilt bronze) and wonderfully veined and dappled griotte marble, is inspired by the classical Corinthian architectural order. Each column features a rectangular griotte marble podium, an unfluted and tapered griotte marble shaft, and a flat griotte marble top—which allows each column to function as a pedestal.
The ormolu throughout is superbly cast. The shaft of each column sits on an ormolu torus, which in turn sits upon a square ormolu base—this ormolu base supported by the marble podium below. Most strikingly, each marble shaft culminates in an architecturally correct Corinthian capital: the capital is replete with acanthus leaves, corner volutes, and cauliculi—each an integral component of the order—all of which are superbly cast in high relief with rich detail.
