With the toprail supported by an S-shaped splat divided in three panels, the top one carved in openwork with a swirling dragon, this fine pair of armchairs are Chinese yoke back style pieces, well-known as works of high sophistication and refinement.
The central panel is painted with figures in a mountainous river landscape, the bottom one with a ruyi head shape openwork, and the sinuous arms are supported by waisted side posts. The rectangular hard seat is supported on circular legs joined by a curved apron above stepped stretchers, and the backs inscribed in Chinese script. A partial customs permit stamp in wax is visibile on one of the corners.
