Pair of patinated bronze studies of hanging game birds
£7,500
This superb pair of bronzes of game birds is a prime example of Animalier sculpture, a school of art that flourished in France in the latter nineteenth century.
This wonderful pair of Animalier sculptures features game birds mounted to oval shaped mahogany backboards. Each sculpture portrays a dead bird—one a partridge, the other a snipe—hanging from twine tied to its feet from a rosette mounted on the backboard. The quality of the bronze casting is remarkable, with the slightest of details, such as the quills and vanes of the feathers, being accurately and naturalistically rendered. Moreover, the warm patination lends a sense of texture and depth to each sculpture beyond the reality of the fine casting.
