Crafted from striped deep blue glass and shining gold ormolu, the vases are of a very impressive shape and celebrate the work of skilled French craftsmen.
Each vase is of a Classical ovoid form and is lavishly adorned with ornate ormolu mounts. The bulbous bodies are flanked by acanthus-shaped handles which transition into Roman-style columns towards the top. Surmounting each one is a lyre, delicately held by charming putti with ornate tasseled reins. Their body postures and facial expressions suggest they are in full focus with the task at hand. Draped across the front and back of the vases is a rich garland.
Topping the vases are blue glass lids, with an ormolu pair of birds among flowers and foliage. The birds appear to be doves, a bird type that mates for life, possibly symbolising lasting love.
A square contoured plinth with lavish Neoclassical style motifs supports each vase. All four sides are filled with an elaborate cartouche with a coat of arms featuring the fleur de lis. Flowing drapery with flowers hangs in between each cartouche adding yet another refined feature to these spectacular vases.
Combining several styles, this timeless pair of vases celebrates various periods within the history of decorative arts and would be a very eye-catching addition to one’s interior.
