Pair of very large ormolu and cut glass candelabra
£75,000
This exceptionally large and impressively crafted pair of ormolu and cut glass candelabra demonstrates the very best of 20th Century French Neoclassicism.
This pair of monumental floor standing candelabra is crafted from ormolu, or gilt bronze, and cut glass, in the distinctive Neoclassical style.
Each candelabrum features a plinth-form ormolu base with three curved sides, narrowing from bottom to top. The base is decorated with an eclectic variety of Neoclassical style ormolu mounts, including Apollo masks set within sunbursts, laurel wreaths, and grasping acanthus leaves. The base supports the central tapering column of the candelabrum, which is crafted from facet cut glass occasionally ringed with moulded ormolu bands.
The column culminates in the wonderfully ornate candelabrum head, which issues thirteen light branches over two tiers: six lower, six upper, and a central surmount. The branches are ornately scrolled and moulded with foliate detailing, each branch terminating in a nozzle above a glass drip pan.
