Description

This eye-catching pair of pedestals was masterfully crafted by Wedgwood in 1877. Established in 1759, the esteemed porcelain and fine china manufacturer developed a wide range of ceramic wares, including majolica - a richly glazed tin-earthenware introduced to Wedgwood’s workshops around 1860.

The pedestals feature round, polychrome tops, perfect for displaying decorative objects. Below, a moulded frieze encircles each piece, adorned with intricate grapevine motifs and clustered bunches. The central section is finished in the distinctive cobalt glaze, creating a striking contrast against the surrounding embellishments. Prominent panther masks on the sides serve as decorative connectors between the lush, fruiting vine swags, while beneath them, ribbon-tied floral compositions add further refinement. At the centre, ribbon-tied intaglio profile portraits stand out in lighter coloration, enhancing the overall visual impact. The pedestals rest on stepped bases, providing stability and grandeur.

Glazed in a vibrant palette of green, amber, turquoise, and cobalt - shades traditionally associated with centuries-old majolica craftsmanship - this pair exemplifies Wedgwood’s mastery of colour and form.

Stamped with ‘WEDGWOOD’ alongside ‘EWF’ and ‘BNF’, the markings follow the company’s three-letter dating system, confirming their creation in 1877.

With their exceptional craftsmanship and bold, decorative appeal, this remarkable pair of pedestals makes a striking addition to both classic and contemporary interiors.
