This oil on board painting by Hermann Fechenbach depicts a group of paper boats sailing above their reflections on a still body of water. The work is executed in subdued tones, with expressive blocks of colour employed the render blocky forms.
Hermann Israel Fechenbach was a German-born British Jewish artist, who began working in the German modern realist style of ‘Die Neue Sachlichkeit’. When the present work was painted in 1952, Fechenbach was living in Colet Gardens in London, and was beginning to receive more commissions and exhibitions after being displaced and interned during the Second World War. Fechenbach, who lost a leg fighting for Germany in the First World War, fled Germany in 1933 and settled in Oxfordshire.
The painting, held within a wooden frame, is signed and dated lower left ‘Hermann Fechenbach 1952’.
