The box is the creation of the French goldsmith Christian Petschler, who worked in Paris in the early 19th century. The box is in 18 carat gold oval, finely decorated with acanthus leaves and scrolling foliage, and dates from c.1820. The top set contains a micromosaic of a seated dog, while the underside set contains a micromosaic of a pair of lovebirds pulling a chariot. The micromosaics are from Italy and date from c.1800. There is a maker's mark on the gold box.
