Ruby set silver and silver-gilt minaudière by Boucheron
By Boucheron (French, founded 1858)
£7,500
This superb minaudière, or lady's handheld evening bag, is a wonderful piece of jewellery, crafted from silver and silver-gilt and studded with exquisite rubies.
This beautiful object is a minaudière, functionally a substitute for a lady's evening bag but aesthetically a piece of handheld jewellery. The present model, by the celebrated Parisian jeweller Boucheron, is known as 'Or/Argent', or gold/silver: the piece is crafted from silver-gilt and silver.
The minaudière is of rectangular form, with a hinged cover closed by a clasp. The top surface of the cover is decorated with pierced silver-gilt scrolling foliage studded with rubies. The minaudière opens to reveal a powder compartment, a mirror, a comb holder with a horn comb, a cigarette compartment, and two lipstick holders.
The piece is fully hallmarked, signed, and numbered, and is accompanied by its original fitted case stamped to the interior 'Boucheron / London 180 New Bond Street / New York 1 East 57th Street / 26 Place Vendôme / Paris'.
