The beautiful paintings in this set, which are painted on copper in imitation of medieval style craftsmanship, depict moments from the Stations of the Cross.
The four paintings in this set are designed in the Gothic Revival style, which in England reached its fullest expression in buildings like Pugin’s Palace of Westminster. Each picture is painted on copper, which imitates the gold-leaf ground of medieval painting. The copper support is richly tooled with grids comprised of fleur-de-lis and crosses fleury. The four paintings depict moments drawn from the Stations of the Cross, including Jesus being condemned to death, Jesus bearing his cross, Jesus falling for the first time, and Jesus meeting his mother. The paintings are executed in a bright, vibrant palette, which accents warmly the golden copper ground. The copper panels are contained within carved oak frames, which are set with plaques beneath that describe the scene above.
