This superb set of four throne armchairs was crafted in Italy during the 20th century in the elegant and decorative Baroque style.
Each throne features an ornate carved giltwood frame. The pierced backs are profusely carved with scrolling acanthus. In the centre is a coat of arms enclosed by acanthus leaf carving, perhaps of the family they were crafted for. The upper part of the back features two charming putti sitting atop grape vines, most likely symbolic of Bacchus, the Greco-Roman god of wine and festivity. These are flanking a shaped cartouche filled with further carved scrolling designs.
The seat as well as the machetes are upholstered in a luxurious maroon velvet, adding a touch of comfort to the pieces. The armrests terminate with an impressive carved winged bust supported by scrolls.
All thrones stand on four feet, two of them carved as lion paws, which are often representative of strength, majesty, and courage. The cabriole-like legs feature acanthus leaf detailing on the knees. The stretcher is elegantly carved with additional acanthus leaf motifs, and the apron is decorated similarly with additional flower motifs.
