Description

The four paintings in this set are designed in the Gothic Revival style. Each picture is painted on a copper support, which imitates the gold-leaf ground of medieval painting. The copper in each painting is richly tooled with fleur-de-lis and crosses fleury.

The four paintings depict moments drawn from the Stations of the Cross, including Veronica wiping the face of Jesus, Jesus falling for the second time, and Jesus meeting the women of Jerusalem, as well as a Pieta scene.

The pictures are executed in a bright, vibrant palette, which accents the golden copper ground. The copper panels are contained within carved oak frames, which are set with titled plaques beneath that describe the scene above.
