Description

Executed and printed during the late 19th century in Meiji period Japan, this superb prints were made by woodblock, and show a rich variety of scenes, all skifully and aristically designed and rendered.

The Meiji period was a time of great social change, and vast cultural expansion and artistic production, and fine and decorative arts were a large part of this output. Work such as these in turn had a significant impact on European art, due to their idiosyncratic stylistic nature and wonderful use of colour and pattern. These scenes here include fine female portraits, women painting, strange scenes of neck-wrestling (!), fishing scenes and mythological images. They are a curious, unique, and fascinating collection of works, emblematic of the variety and skill of Meiji era arts.
