This set of four girandoles are brimming with character and charm, typifying the eccentricity of the later Rococo design period. Each girandole uses as its base a unique piece of curved glass, surrounded by an ornate giltwood frame that is flanked by two candlesticks.
The detailing of the giltwood frames is immaculate. The central curved mirror is surmounted by a fence design in the lower quartile, which covers the mirror with an asymmetric design. Each side of the fence motif is flanked by a series of Doric-style columns, which again extend asymmetrically to different heights.
The outer edges of the frame feature the curving foliate cresting typical of the Rococo style, expertly twisting around the curved mirror glass. The base of the girandole includes a scrolling acanthus support, from which two candle sconces are mounted, which also have a floral design. The base of each of these sconces is carved to imitate dripping wax, showing the exceptional skill of the maker. Each mirror has a foliate finial that is reminiscent of a floral bouquet.
Each of the girandoles features an old newspaper clipping on the backing, dating to 1817.
With their ornamental and dramatic style, these Rococo style pieces feature exceptional detail, and would make fabulous wall decoration for the appropriate interior.
