Description

This exquisite set of paintings is executed on pith paper, also known as rice paper. With its unusually low absorbency, the paint pools on the surface like enamel, creating raised areas of pigmentation that catch the viewer’s eye.

Rendered in a strikingly vibrant colour palette, each piece showcases a lavish composition of flowers, foliage, and butterflies. The selection of blooms carries deep cultural significance in Chinese tradition. For example, peonies are known as the ‘king of flowers’ and is closely associated with royalty and are symbolic of wealth and peace. Camellias, which appear throughout the collection, represent love and devotion.

Among the floral arrangements, butterflies of varying sizes are delicately interwoven, their intricately painted wings standing out in stunning detail against the blossoms.

Each painting is set within an elegant burgundy frame, adorned with pierced metal detailing along the edges, as well as gilt and paper embellishments. These are a later addition.

This extensive collection is a remarkable fusion of artistry and symbolism, making it a superb addition to both contemporary and classic interiors.
