This beautiful three-piece clock set, crafted from porcelain, ormolu (gilt bronze), and lapis lazuli—the lapis lazuli being a later, beneficial addition—is comprised of a central mantel clock and a pair of flanking vases.
The mantel clock’s case is rectangular in form, its two sides scrolled. The lapis case is raised by ormolu scrolled feet and is mounted throughout with ormolu elements including, most ornately, the foliate forms that reside above and below the circular dial—the dial, of white enamel, is inscribed with Roman numeral hour marks. The lapis case is surmounted by a large and impressive ormolu sculptural group, exceptionally finely wrought. The group depicts Venus, semi-nude and seated before her mirror. The mirror is held by one cherub, while another cherub stands by her opposite side and gazes towards her face.
Each of the flanking vases is raised on a conforming lapis lazuli base, mounted, like the clock, with ormolu elements. The Sèvres style porcelain vases feature beautiful blue ground, parcel gilt, with central panels depicting fête galante scenes of courtly love within idyllic, Italianate landscapes. Each vase is mounted with rectilinear ormolu handles.
The clock dial is indistinctly signed with a rubbed signature.
