Sterling silver antique Judaica Torah breast plate or shield
£5,500
This beautiful piece of Judaica is a large Torah breast plate or shield, wrought in sterling silver, and elegantly applied with crowns, bells, and floral motifs.
Of unclear continental, possibly German origins, this exceptional piece is a very fine sterling silver Torah breast plate, also known as a Torah shield, and is hallmarked and dated 1882.
Tall, slim, and upright, it features a large scrolling foliate border with clam-shell like finials to the centre top and bottom, with a large crown surmount, a pair of pillars on either side capped with and holding pendant bells.Â
In the centre, a panel engraved with the ten commandments opens up to reveal a miniature Torah model, and a removable plaque below is engraved with the Hebrew for passover. Beneath there is a dedication plaque similarly engraved in Hebrew.
An elegant antique piece of Judaica, this work will be of great interest to those with a love of items of religious history, as well as those with an appreciation for fine antique sterling silver.
