The Romanesque style of art and architecture originates from Western Europe in the 11th and 12th Centuries, and took inspiration from a wide and varied range of sources, including ancient Rome, Scandinavia and the Christian, Jewish and Islamic traditions. Romanesque decoration is characterised by its expressive representation of the human form, as well as mythical beasts and fantastic natural imagery.
