Description

This dynamic oil painting depicts a scene of high action: a Cossack soldier, drawn on a sleigh by four stampeding horses, moves with great pace over a frozen tundra landscape. The Cossack’s great haste is explained by the pack of wolves that chase him, only metres from the tail of his sleigh. The white of the frozen ground is accented in contrast to the foil of the dark dusk sky, with bands of orange from the setting sun just visible above the horizon. The painting is executed with great expressiveness, and the painterly manner is accomplished.

The painting, which is contained within a carved giltwood frame, is signed to the lower left 'C. Stoiloff'.
