Rivière, Théodore (French, 1857-1912)

Theodore Rivière was a sculptor working in France in the late 19th Century. He was a pupil at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and was taught by the renowned sculptor Alexandre Falguière. After his studies Rivere went to work in the workshop of another prestigious late 19th Century sculptor, Marius Jean Antonin Mercie. 

Riviere's best known works were two large Orientalist groups of scenes from Gustave Flaubert's novel Salammbo, which were inspired by his time living in Carthage. These can now be found in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris and many more examples were cast in the 1890s, including smaller works in bronze and ivory.
