By Meissen Porcelain Manufactory (German, founded 1710)
£4,500
These exquisite bird models are inspired by the designs of Johann Joachim Kändler, each showcasing the centuries-old craftsmanship perfected at Meissen.
This exquisite set of three bird models was expertly crafted by the renowned Meissen porcelain manufactory. Established in the early 18th century, Meissen was initially financed by Augustus the Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. Over the years, it became a favoured supplier to an elite international clientele.
Each bird figure is masterfully sculpted from white porcelain and meticulously hand-painted. They are perched on finely crafted bases designed to resemble tree trunks adorned with delicate leaves and flowers. The largest figure, a magpie, leans forward gracefully with its beak open, as if mid-song or searching for food. The sparrow gazes intently ahead, while the bullfinch assumes a similar poised stance. A vibrant colour palette brings the birds’ feathers to life, while softer pastel shades complement the base.
These models are based on designs by Johann Joachim Kändler (1706–1775), Meissen’s most influential modeller. Each figure bears the manufactory’s iconic underglaze blue crossed swords mark.
A remarkable addition to any porcelain collection, this elegant set is particularly suited for enthusiasts of both fine European ceramics and ornithology.
