Questions about this piece?
Dating from c.1880, and attributed to Gräflich Schaffgotsch'sche Josephinenhütte in Schreiberhau, Silesia, (possibly after designs by Franz Pohl Jr.) this superb three-piece garniture set consists of vases shaped in Classical form: a pair of baluster vases and covers, and a footed bombé centerpiece. Made from enamelled black-glass, each object is replete with gilt upright scroll handles and raised on a cylindrical pedestal base, made of concentric rings and adorned with a light-blue frieze pattern. They are enameled in white and enriched in gilding with flowers and insects. The baluster vases also feature grisaille woodland fairies, or winged putti, lounging in the woodland setting. Blending Classical symposiastic influence with a wonderful idyllic 19th century European character, this set is of exceptional quality, artistry, and beauty.
