Three-piece marble and gilt bronze clock set by Barbedienne
By Barbedienne, Ferdinand (French, 1810-1892)
£55,000
Barbedienne's monumental three-piece clock set in sumptuous red griotte marble and gilt bronze is a magnificent example of Parisian Belle Époque craftsmanship.
This set comprises a central mantel clock with a pair of flanking candelabra. The central clock is surmounted by a large gilt and patinated bronze seated figure of a Roman warrior, after Paul Dubois' famous sculpture ‘Le Courage Militaire’. The figure is signed 'P. Dubois' and 'F. Barbedienne Fondeur'. The circular marble clock dial, with an ormolu foliate surround mounted on a red griotte marble case with four ormolu paw feet, is signed 'F. Barbedienne / Paris'. The pair of ormolu mounted nine-light flanking candelabra, each crafted from griotte marble, are similarly decorated, each signed 'F. Barbedienne'. The ormolu throughout is superbly finished, wrought in an ornate Neoclassical style in the finest fashion by Barbedienne.
