Description

This variously patterned chapan ikat robe was traditionally worn by nomadic tribes as well as settlers in Uzbekistan and other Central Asian regions. Made from a mix of silk and cotton, the robe is of exceptional quality.

The outside of the t-shaped robe is patterned with large red and yellow shapes on an ivory canvas, while the inside is decorated with printed floral compositions arranged in a geometric pattern.

The trim of the robe is further embroidered with a symmetrical and geometrical pattern. This feature carried symbolic meaning as it was meant to protect the wearer from evil forces. The long sleeves protected the wearer from the cold temperatures in the Central Asian regions.

More brightly coloured and with intricate embroidery robes were symbols of wealth. Some would wear numerous ikat robes at once to display their status. Traditionally, this piece of clothing was worn with a belt together with trousers and a tunic, forming a part of a lady’s and a gentleman’s wardrobe.

Of a vibrant design and with a rich history, this piece makes a superb addition to a man’s or woman’s clothes collection.
