These exquisite antiques pay tribute to the renowned Milton shield, originally designed by Léonard Morel-Ladeuil (French, 1820–1888) for Elkington & Co., and first crafted in 1866. The original shield, a masterwork of silver and damascened iron, was inspired by scenes from John Milton’s Paradise Lost (1667), which explores the biblical story of the fall of man - most notably the temptation of Adam and Eve by Satan and their subsequent expulsion from the Garden of Eden. It was one of the most celebrated pieces exhibited at the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle.
These present examples are crafted from imitation ivory and tortoiseshell, with the lighter composite material emphasizing the dramatic relief scenes. At the centre of each shield is a medallion depicting Archangel Raphael proclaiming victory over the rebellious angels to Adam and Eve. Above this scene appears God the Father, flanked by panels showing heavenly angels defeating the rebels. Below, the archangel Michael is shown triumphing over Satan.
The borders are richly adorned with patterned motifs, stars, and nature-inspired iconography, along with angels and mythological creatures. The outer edge is particularly ornate, blending classical symbolism with fine detail.
Each shield bears inscriptions in the bottom corners: ‘Morel-Ladeuil Fecit’ on the right and ‘Elkington & Co.’ on the left.
Of an impressive size and design, these fine antiques are a very desirable addition to one’s collection and would make super wall décor in both modern and traditional interiors.
