One of the kaftans is purple and silver, while the other is yellow, sage green and purple. Both are embroidered with metal threads along their striped exteriors. The purple kaftan features curved, snaking metal thread embroidery and is not buttoned all the way down, while the yellow kaftan features block metal stripes and can be buttoned all the way down.
In the early 19th Century, caftans were worn over a robe. They were open in form, sometimes had sleeves and usually did not have a collar. Other similar examples can be found in the Topkapi Palace Museum, Istanbul.
