Very large antique Louis XV style gilt and patinated bronze clock set

This exceptional clock set, crafted in late 19th century France, embodies the opulence of the Louis XV style, renowned for its playful elegance and flowing, sinuous designs, which flourished between 1730 and 1760.

The clock case is adorned with an abundance of intricate C-scrolls, S-curves, and acanthus leaf motifs, reflecting the grandeur of the style. The glass-covered clock face, featuring black Roman numerals, is richly embellished with delicate scrollwork and floral decorations, underscoring the exceptional craftsmanship of the piece. Above the dial, an elaborate ribbon-tied floral garland cascades gracefully, enhancing the ornate composition. Two patinated bronze cherubs flank the clock, one holding wheat and the other flowers, symbolising prosperity and abundance. At the centre of the case, a stylised shell motif is prominently displayed, while beneath it, a finely cast female mask is framed by pierced ormolu panels.

Accompanying the clock are two matching torchères, designed in a similar manner as the central piece. Each torchère features a patinated bronze cherub seated atop a raised, ornately shaped plinth mirroring the clock’s design. The cherubs hold cornucopias, traditionally symbolising plenty, each crowned with a striking and unusual frosted glass flame-shaped shade. The torchères are crafted as mirror images of each other, creating a visually engaging arrangement as the cherubs appear to gaze toward one another.

Every surface of this magnificent three-piece set is adorned with masterful details, showcasing the ingenuity of French artisans and the timeless allure of the Louis XV style.
