Crafted from ormolu, this mantel clock is a creation of Beurdeley, the renowned French firm celebrated for its exceptional furniture and decorative arts. Established in 1818, Beurdeley gained international acclaim, exhibiting at prestigious 19th-century world’s fairs and earning multiple distinguished awards. Enhancing the clock’s significance, its mechanism was produced by Raingo Frères, master clockmakers who supplied timepieces to royalty and an elite clientele, including Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie.
Embodying the opulence of the Louis XV style, the clock case is richly adorned with finely cast ormolu detailing. Atop the piece, a charming figure of Cupid holds an arrow in his arm, symbolising love. Below, the case is elaborately decorated, culminating in four sculpted ram heads, one at each corner.
A prominent enamel clock face dominates the design, featuring hand-painted blue Roman numerals, each delicately framed by an intricate ormolu border. Beneath it, the front showcases a gracefully sculpted reclining female figure, draped in flowing textiles. Behind her, additional cast motifs harmonise with the rest of the design, enhancing the clock’s artistic appeal.
The timepiece stands on four scrolling feet, each adorned with cherubic busts, further emphasising its exquisite craftsmanship. The ormolu bears the mark ‘B.Y.’ for Beurdeley, while the clock face is signed ‘Raingo Frères’ and the clock mechanism ‘Vincenti & Cie’.Â
Of outstanding quality and refined elegance, this Louis XV-style mantel clock is a distinguished addition to any sophisticated interior.
