£120,000
Adorned with intricate marine-themed figures and motifs, this jardinière is a remarkable example of exquisite French craftsmanship, influenced by the renowned Christofle firm.
This exceptional silvered bronze jardinière is crafted in the style of Christofle, the renowned French firm famous for its expertise in silverware and for pioneering electrolytic gilding and silver plating in metalwork.
The jardinière’s ship-shaped body is skilfully crafted and adorned with various marine-inspired motifs. The pierced upper frieze features an intricate design of scrolls, swirls, and foliate branches. Beneath, a prominent tasselled swag is complemented by smaller swags adorned with elaborate high-relief patterns. The craftsmanship of this piece is outstanding, with each feature brilliantly executed to create a lifelike appearance, such as the twisted rope that binds the swags.
Supporting the jardinière are four charming cherub mermen, each raising their hands as they balance the piece. Their gazes are directed toward the wavy sea base, while their tails swirl upward, showcasing their graceful form. The entire composition rests on a shaped base, enhancing the elegance of the design.
Flanking the main body are two handles, each adorned with unique motifs. One handle takes the form of a palmette, embellished with delicate dots and floral details, while the other is designed as a hippocampus. In Greek mythology, this beautifully sculpted sea creature serves as the chariot-driver for deities such as Poseidon.
Exquisitely crafted from silvered bronze, this jardinière is a magnificent addition to any antique collection.
