Very large patinated bronze figural lamp by Grégoire

This towering antique piece combines a superb figural bronze lamp with a later mahogany pedestal. Complementing the tones of the bronze above, the pedestal is of rectangular form, with panelling on each of the four sides.

Crafted from patinated bronze, the lamp is formed of a semi-clad nude maiden. Barely covered, flowing drapery curves around her body in an impressive feat of craftsmanship. The woman is posed stepping forward onto one leg, and she raises her arms above her head as she does so. In her hands, she daintily holds three foliate branch light fittings, one of which is applied with a swallow. The resulting image is wonderfully idealised, combining a classical female nude with flora and fauna to create a sense of natural idyll.

The woman stands upon a bow-fronted naturalistic base, which is mounted upon a corresponding moulded black marble plinth. The patinated bronze, black marble, and rich mahogany introduce a variety of textures and colours to the piece.

The base of the bronze itself is signed L. GREGOIRE to the front right side. Jean-Louis Grégoire (1840-1890) was a notable French sculptor working in bronze and marble. Exhibiting at the Paris Salon throughout his career, his elegant sculptures were Academic in style, often taking classical themes as the subject. The rear of the base also features a contemporary retailer's mark inscribed ‘BY APPOINTMENT TO THE QUEEN. BELLMAN, IVY & CARTER, NEW BOND ST, LONDON, MADE IN FRANCE’.

This sculptural lamp is of excellent quality, and would make a wonderful addition to the appropriate interior.
