This fantastic piece is a very large porcelain parrot model made by the German makers Volkstedt in the early part of the twentieth century.
Vibrant, quirky, and full of life and character, it exemplifies the skill of German porcelain makers, particularly those working within the field of animalia or animal sculpture. Twisting its head back to the left, the parrot sits upon a tree stump, with its feathers sumptuously painted in a host of rich, rainbow like shades and colours, the dominant green turning into colourful arrays along the wings and into the tail feathers.
Volkstedt were leading German porcelain makers in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Their models and miniatures are known for their exceptional detail, fidelity to nature, and lively quality, remaining highly popular and well-regarded to this day. The detail to the face in particular is demonstrative of the artistic prowess of the makers, helping to show why Volkstedt works are so highly prized and sought by collectors today.
