Victorian period mahogany and turtle stone marble side table
£2,500
This 19th Century circular side table is a wonderful piece of furniture, which is covered by a truly exquisite ancient ‘turtle-stone’, or Septarian Nodule marble top.
This mahogany wood table features a single stem, which is set on a triform support, composed of three slightly flared legs with scrolled tops and feet. The table’s turned stem is shaped, and it is gadrooned near its base.
The stem is surmounted by a circular table top, the centre of which is inset with a piece of Septarian Nodule marble. This marble is known as ‘turtle-stone’ because of its grey-green, brown and yellow colouring and shell-like pattern. Septarian Nodule marble was formed millions of years ago, by mud balls that dried out and the cracks that were created were filled with Calcite crystals (created from crushed seashells). The marble first began to be cut, polished and inset into furniture in the 19th Century in England.
