This striking clock is an unusual piece and a fine example of late Victorian design. It is formed as a circular clock dial set inside an oval-shaped gilt bronze case, on a rectangular base and surmounted by a winged, horn-blowing putto on a plinth.
The clock case is inset with panels of silvered bronze, themselves inset with agate jewels. The clock dial is inscribed 'Howell James & Co / To The Queen / London - Paris', for Howell James & Co, the famed London retailers who were official suppliers of jewellery to Queen Victoria. There is a similar stamp on the clock's movement, together with the inventory number 1193.
Below the clock case there are finely-cast silvered bronze winged beasts mounted onto either side of the base, with a shell motif in the centre between them. There are further silvered bronze mounts at either side of the clock case, which take the form of scrolls with pierced foliate decorations and gilt bronze balls mounted along their longer side.
