Victorian period silvered and gilt bronze mantel clock
£5,500
This wonderful mantel clock, replete with nautical motifs including hippocampi and embossed scallop shells, is a truly charming piece of Victorian design.
This striking mantel clock is an unusual piece of late Victorian design. It is formed as a circular enamel clock dial set inside an oval-shaped gilt bronze (ormolu) case, which is supported by a rectangular ormolu base. Moreover, the clock is surmounted by a winged, horn-blowing putto on a plinth, crafted from silvered bronze, and is flanked by two silvered bronze hippocampi. The theme of the clock is distinctly nautical: the hippocampi being beasts of the sea, likewise too the horn-blowing putto; the clock case is finished with scallop shell and other marine motifs.
The reverse of the case features a Victorian registration stamp for 11 February 1871.
