Description

Depicting Hannah with draping robes holding Samuel in her left arm and placing a donation in a trunk with an engraved Menorah to its front, signed 'F. Andrei. Inv. E. Scolp. Roma 1861'.

According to the Bible, Hannah remained unable to have a child until she wept and prayed at the Temple. In her prayer, Hannah asked God to give her a son, promising in return that she would return the child to the service of the Lord under the guidance of the Shiloh priests. Samuel later became a prophet and foretold the identity of the first two kings of Israel, Saul and David.
