£15,000
Created by the prestigious Danish artist, this painting showcases Simonsen’s expertise in military scenes, along with the clear influence of his travels in Algeria.
This striking oil on canvas was painted by Niels Simonsen in 1861. Born in 1807, Simonsen first achieved commercial success as a portrait sculptor in Denmark. In 1833, he pivoted to painting and established himself quickly as one of the foremost history and military artists in Danish society. His travels across Europe and North Africa helped to refine his skills, and in 1883 he was made a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts.
The artwork depicts a battle scene between the French Zouaves and Arabic horsemen. The Zouaves were a class of light infantry regiments that served in French North Africa. Their distinctive uniform, orientalist in inspiration, made them popular figures to depict in art. Niels Simonsen, renowned for his skilful depiction of military scenes, was naturally drawn to the Zouaves when a patron funded his trip to Algeria.
Mounted in a giltwood frame, this painting comes with a plaque reading ‘PRF Niels Simonsen / Zuaver og Arabere I Kamp’ and is signed ‘N.S. 60’ in the lower left corner.
This painting is a beautiful example of Simonsen’s skill and would make a wonderful addition to any fine art collection.
