19th Century Shirvan red and blue wool carpet

This wonderful, vibrantly coloured carpet was hand-woven in wool in the late 19th Century in the historic Shirvan region in eastern Caucasus.

Description

The carpet is beautifully woven in the style of antique Caucasian rugs. Its field features three deep blue eight-point stars, which are edged with yellow and enclose red and white geometric and stylised floral motifs. The stars are surrounded by an area of red, woven with black, white, green and yellow formalised flowers, animals and birds. The carpet’s field is framed by four borders, which are decorated with colourful geometric shapes and stylised foliage.

This carpet is notable for the intricacy and vibrancy of its woven decoration. It will add colour and character to the hallway or living room it is placed in.
