Antique dressing table with chair retailed by Au Gros Chêne
Retailed by Au Gros Chêne (French, est. 19th Century)
£15,000
This beautiful dressing table and chair set, wrought from deftly veneered wood and gilt bronze, was retailed by the celebrated furnishers Au Gros Chêne.
This superb dressing table set is a fine example of late 19th century French Neoclassicism. The dressing table features a rectangular tabletop veneered in a manner to reveal the grain of the wood, with the grains then arranged geometrically. The top, which is protected beneath a glass cover, is supported by the apron, similarly veneered. The apron is inset to the front with three frieze drawers: one central shaped drawer and two flanking drawers. The table is supported by four stylised cabriole legs, each terminating in an ormolu foliate sabot and set to the shoulder with an ornate ormolu foliate scrolled mount.
From the back of the tabletop rises the wooden structure that supports the mirror, which is veneered in a conforming manner and is set with fine ormolu foliate mounts. The backboard contains a large oval mirror and is mounted above with twin ormolu lights.
The matching chair features a wicker latticed seat and backrest.
