Crafted in late 19th century France, this magnificent salon suite is crafted in the refined Empire style.
The set comprises one canape, two armchairs and two chairs. Each piece has been recently skilfully reupholstered with luxurious velvet upholstery. The striped pattern on the textile leads one’s eyes towards the intricate ormolu detailing adorning the mahogany frames. A strong sense of balance and symmetry is clearly noticeable in the design of this set. Ancient Greek-style Sphinxes support the sleek armrests, their wings extending backwards acting as additional support. Ormolu floral rosettes are mounted in several places on all five pieces, many of them on the mahogany frieze under the seats.
Sabre legs are attached to the back of each piece, while the front ones are more defined with prominent ormolu mounts. A winged lion is mounted on the upper part of each leg, appearing as if he is supporting the weight of the piece on his head and wings. The front legs terminate in ormolu lion paw feet. The plush, gold colouration of the velvet beautifully matches the shining gold of the ormolu, while the deep brown mahogany wonderfully frames the lighter features.Â
Embodying all key characteristics of the luxurious yet refined Empire style, this magnificent salon suite would make a superb addition to a fashionable interior.
