Description

The Megillah scroll case is crafted entirely in filigree silver, and takes cylindrical form with a long, slender handle and a crown form finial. The scroll case is decorated all over with intricate filigree silver work in foliate, scrolling patterns which feature the Star of David on each side to the centre. The scroll case features a vertical panel which can be pulled out, opening to reveal a length of parchment upon which is written the Book of Esther in Hebrew. The Book of Esther tells the Ancient Persian story of Esther and King Ahasuerus, which is read as part of the Jewish festival of Purim. The handle of the scroll can be twisted to rewind the scroll back into the case.

The scroll is signed 'Bezalel Jerusalem' by the Bezalel Academy of Arts & Design, which was established in 1906 in Jerusalem.
