Description

This ormolu (gilt bronze) clock set is comprised of a central mantel clock and a pair of flanking candelabra. The clock case and the bodies of the candelabra are formed entirely of ormolu, granting the garniture a striking appearance.

The mantel clock is formed of a shaped and tiered flat base, raised by scrolled feet to the front and toupie feet to the rear. The ormolu clock dial, featuring Roman numeral hour marks on individual enamel cartouches, is raised from the base by a standing ormolu putto, who holds the clock drum above his head as if he is Atlas. The standing putto and clock drum are surrounded by architectural elements, and the entire ensemble is surmounted by an elaborate ormolu vase-form finial. The case features foliate ormolu mounts throughout, including swags that drape from the finial around the sides of the circular clock drum.

The candelabra are similarly decorated, formed of pierced and shaped bases that rise to vase-form stems. Each candelabrum supports four lights, the lights at the termini of elaborately scrolled ormolu branches. The casting throughout is intricately and delicately wrought, granting the candelabra, as well as the clock case, a highly varied and ornate appearance.
