Description

The ormolu (gilt bronze) fireplace fender features a long body which is pierced and decorated with a central cartouche, flanked by scrolled acanthus leaves. The ends of the fender are topped by classical style full-length, semi-nude figures. These figures recline on seats, composed of stylised oversized foliage. One is a beautiful young female, while the other is a bearded young male, holding a blacksmith's hammer in one hand. This figure can be identified as Hephaestus (or Vulcan), the classical god of fire, metalworking and the forge. The female figure may be the goddess of love, Aphrodite (or Venus), who was Hephaestus’s wife. These embodiments of fire and passion are well-suited to their place on a fireplace fender.
