Description

This pâte-sur-pâte (or paste on paste) porcelain plaque is rectangular in shape. The plaque, which features a dark blue-black ground, is centred with a vignette in blue tinged white of a Watteau-like scene of a guitarist and vocalist set amidst foliage and musical instruments. The image is rendered in low relief, with the semi-transparency of the white porcelain over the dark ground resulting in a great range of tone, and a sculptural quality.

The plaque bears the JC monogram of J. H. Cope & Co. to the vignette.
