This superb set is meticulously engraved, embodying the best of early 20th century Persian metalwork. The set comprises of twenty-two elements in total, which include: a large oval tray, a twin-handled sugar bowl, ten handled engraved glass coffee cups with silver mounts, and ten accompanying spoons.
Each item sports a similar engraved design, creating a sense of unity between the pieces of the set. The detailing is highly intricate throughout, with delicate engraving being done on a minute scale, which speaks to the extraordinary skill of the set’s maker. The large tray features three concentric mandala-esque designs, surrounded by swirling foliate patterns. Placing dense shading and etching against plainer sections has expertly created a sense of depth and texture.
The spoons, sugar bowl, and cups all feature this similar foliate patterning that has become a hallmark of the Persian design style. The upper portion of the cups is made of glass, onto which elegant leaf patterns have been engraved. The sugar bowl and cups also feature angular, geometric handles, which are an interesting design feature that contrasts beautifully with the smoother and more flowing floral patterns.
The pieces are variously marked with the stamp ‘84’, the letter ‘A’ in a shield-shaped cartouche, and an unknown Persian workshop hallmark.
This refined set is a true piece of Persian history with a stunning, uniform design, and would make a fantastic addition to any antiques collection.
