This exceptional Baroque period German centre table is profusely decorated with wonderful marquetry veneers, all wrought into foliage, vines, and rearing horses.
This Baroque period centre table was crafted in Germany during the early 17th Century. The tabletop extends widely over its supporting apron, which is raised on four legs joined by a lower tier. The square profile legs, which taper gently, are carved towards their tops with entablature type forms. The table is decorated all over with profuse inlays in a variety of woods, including walnut, burlwood, maple, and local German fruitwoods. The marquetry designs take the forms of scrolling foliate forms, particularly evident on the tabletop, which is decorated at centre with an inlaid rearing horse. The exceptionally rich inlaid veneers continue throughout the surface of the table, decorating the apron, the surface of the lower tier, and the sides of each leg.
