This quirky collection of ice cream moulds dates to the beginning of the 20th century, not long after the invention of such ingenious models.
Each of the eight moulds comprises a two-piece hinged apparatus made from pewter, with traditional fruit and floral designs. The ice cream would have been spooned into both sides of the mould, after which the two sides would be pressed firmly together. The heaviness of the pewter pieces kept the cold inside so that when the mould was opened, the cream would be set in a charming visual design.
The moulds are variously marked ‘S & Co.’ (Schall & Co.) and ‘E & Co., NY’ (Epplesheimer & Co.), along with some catalogue numbers. Both Schall & Co. and Epplesheimer & Co. were prominent American companies making pewter moulds at the turn of the 20th century, testifying to the historicity of this collection. Both companies’ products were celebrated for their wonderful detail. Â
A feast for both the eyes and the tastebuds, this sweet collection would make a truly unique addition to any antique collection.
