Description

This collection is comprised of six glass huqqa bases which vary in their shape and decoration. All six items were crafted in the late 19th Century in Bohemia—a historic region which today forms part of the Czech Republic.

The set includes one huqqa base which is crafted from clear glass and covered with a white and deep blue overlay. This huqqa stands on a short foot and features a bulbous bottom with a cylindrical panelled neck. It is finely decorated with clear glass medallions which are enamelled with colourful flowers, white scrollwork and beads. White enamel leafy C-scrolls and raised turquoise beads decorate the blue sections of the item.

A second glass huqqa base is decorated with a red overlay. It is composed of an ovoid boy with a tall panelled neck, which is set on a splayed foot on a square platform. The huqqa is finely decorated with orange enamel scrollwork and multicoloured flowers within clear medallions.

This collection also includes one deep red overlay glass huqqa base. This has a bulbous, flat-bottomed body and a panelled neck. The huqqa is decorated with clear glass panels, medallions, flowers and stars, some of which feature enamel flowers. Its red body is further ornamented by gilt serpentine patterns and gilt raised beads.

One glass huqqa base is entirely covered with a deep blue overlay. This base stands on a circular foot and features a rounded body with a tall panelled neck. It is finely parcel gilt with swirling designs, floral motifs and medallions. The medallions are filled with gilt raised beads and enamel flowers.

The collection also features one bell-shaped huqqa base which is crafted from lime-green glass. This is decorated with enamel flowers, gilt bands, swirling patterns and raised beads, as well as a portrait of Mozaffar ad-Din Shah, the late 19th-early 20th Century king of Persia.

The final item is a clear glass huqqa base which is decorated with gilt patterns, raised beads and enamel flowers. This is composed of a cylindrical neck and a rounded body, which tapers towards its bottom.
